Yielding light from electricity requires light bulbs and are a necessity for lighting dark areas. There are several types of light bulbs including LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent (CFs) light bulbs.LED light bulbs are solid-state lighting devices that are capable of fitting in standard screw-in connections and they utilize LED. LEDs are basically light emitting diodes utilized in light bulbs to produce light. The bulbs produce visible light by the use of a semiconductor device every time an electric current pass through it. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use fluorescent lambs that are filled with argon gas and a little bit of mercury. The cathode in the fluorescent lamps is heated and produces electrons which hit the argon gas and mercury. The excited mercury produces ultraviolet light (UV) which is not visible. The UV light is then passed through a phosphor which causes it to emit more visible light. LED light bulbs are therefore considered to be more environmentally friendly alternative as they do not use mercury which is toxic.
The energy efficiency of the LED and CFs light bulbs varies considerably with the LED light bulbs being more efficient. The LED light bulbs do not require time for warming up as they start instantly once electricity is switched on. They are manufactured out of plastic other than the most used glass making them more durable. LED light bulbs are capable of lighting in all weather conditions including cold weather. LED and CFs light bulbs have the same lighting conditions although the LEDs last longer as use less energy making them cost effective.
Lumen of light bulb should be one of the major consideration other than wattage during purchase of the LED light bulbs. Lumen is the real measurement of the brightness provided by a light bulb while wattage is the measurement of how much energy a light bulb draws. CFs and LED light bulbs could have the same number of lumens but the wattage of CFs would be higher than that of LEDs. Other consideration when purchasing a light bulb is the color need since they have a wide color range and also where the bulb is to be used. The measurement of color temperature is kelvins and the lower the number, the yellower the color. LED light bulbs require a direct current electrical power hence LED driver is required to convert the alternating current from the power supply.
Improved LED light bulbs have been developed with better efficiency, cost and output making them suitable for all environments. LED light bulbs should be checked for compatibility for use in fixtures during installation as heat build-up can cause light bulb failure or even fire.
